Working Method of Iron Removal Filter
As water passes through the filter, soluble iron and manganese react with the special filter material
(greensand) to form insoluble iron and manganese. The insoluble products are then filtered in the process.
Over time the insoluble particles will build up in the filter and must be removed by backwashing.
The filter material also requires regeneration with permanganate solution.
Regeneration will leave the filter media coated once again with a material that adsorbs soluble iron and
manganese.
Most of the filters are rated to be effective treating water with iron concentrations up to 10 ppm.
Nevertheless the pH of the water will greatly influence their ability to remove iron and manganese.
